Our Journey while Experiencing the City

For the past 8 weeks, you have joined me on my journey in exploring the Twin Cities. Sadly, this will be my last blog posts for this class and this page, but I am thankful for this opportunity. I have gone to many different events, experienced diverse cultures that are a part of the cities, and had the chance to get to know the city that I live in better.

I personally do not enjoy driving in the city at all, and yet I love the city. I have enjoyed all of the fun events that I have been able to experience. This journey has not only been myself, but also my classmates who have gone on this city experience with me in going to many different cultural restaurants, checking out art and museums, and finding all different types and kinds of bookstores that the city holds.

On this journey, you and I have gone to the Winter Carnival Opening to see the Ice Palace light up with lights and fireworks. The cold, but a fun experience of seeing the fireworks and along with the many, many people who showed up just for this one event to see a giant structure made of ice and snow light up.

The second stop on our journey was the Cajun Twist restaurant that will be opening up in the new Trailhead building in Minneapolis, coming this spring. The food smelled amazing, and the owner was very warm, welcoming and excited about her new expansion. When the building is built go on over and check out the restaurant and go skiing or snowboarding as well.

Our journey then took us to the native people of Dakhóta to a Dakota language class. This wonderful opportunity to engage in a different language and culture that is not very common in Minnesota. Being able to learn the language and the native people was a great chance to understand why they want to help spread their roots so that the native language does not die out.

A Disney trivia night was the next stop on our journey through the city, in Maple Grove. This was so much fun, trying to guess the Disney character, movie, or lyrics while reminiscing about all of the Disney movies and songs that people knew or didn’t know was surprising and nostalgic.

Cinco De Mayo is only three months away still, but a mini celebration as happening at Rice Park in St. Paul, to help raise awareness for the event. Hearing the singers and seeing the people who gather was a great sight.

Here is where we took a short rest on our journey to stop and encourage others to go outside into the city and enjoy themselves. In addition, a time to reflect on the places that we have gone to so far in the city and to invite others out with us on our next adventure as the journey through/into the city continues.

A night of celebration with the Korean New Year, eating Korean food, and watching the children perform on stage was an amazing cultural experience. Sejong Academy opened themselves up to the public so that they could raise money for their students to take a trip to Korea, and to invite other people into the Korean culture.

Mall of America was the place to be on the next stop on our journey, for a Nick at night event. That night was filled with laughter and screaming people while they rode on the Nickelodeon Universe rides, and enjoyed themselves with their friends in the theme park.

As the journey continues, we went swing dancing and learned 7 tips and tricks to the fun jazzed-swing, swing dancing night every Thursday night at the Ukrainian American Community Center. Dancing the night away to fun and sometimes faced-paced jazz and swing music was a great time out with friends or couples.

The second to the last stop was at Northrop for a beautiful rendition of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot through the Les Balletes De Monte-Carlo dance company tour. That is traveling through the United States and all over the world.

Finally, the last stop is where you are right now reading this post. This could be anywhere, at home, at work, on the bus, etc. Take a look at all of the places we have been to together. We have traveled all over the Twin Cities to all different types of events and places. If you are reading this post for the first time and you are looking for something to do. Here is my advice, step outside of your house, on your way home from work take the scenic root and get lost in the city. Go and experience new things, places, people, and cultures, then come back and share your experience (whether good or bad) share with them what you know, spread the word, and what you have experienced.
