Hey, Men

Men, here’s a question for you: What’s your stance on human trafficking? I’m sure you don’t condone the exploitation of young women and girls, and I’m sure you wish it didn’t exist. But what are you doing about this devastating injustice that is going on all around us? Maybe you’re interested in doing something about it, but you don’t know how to help.

Let me tell you about a unique organization working to fight sex trafficking from a different angle than most organizations. Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer to write grant proposals for a Minneapolis-based nonprofit called MATTOO. Men Against The Trafficking Of Others. Most anti-sex trafficking organizations consist of women helping and sheltering other women who are victims of sex trafficking. However, MATTOO’s purpose is to educate and counsel men on the issue of sex trafficking, and how to prevent it. The idea is that raising awareness and educating men on the subject of sex trafficking is the best way to change our society. If more men were willing to stand up against sex trafficking, the market for buying and selling sex would be a lot smaller. MATTOO educates men through a curriculum that addresses myths about sex trafficking, signs that someone is being trafficked, and how to teach and counsel other men on the subject with the hopes of decreasing the demand society has placed on human trafficking.

This isn’t a topic most men feel comfortable talking about regularly and openly. It might be uncomfortable for you to share with your guy friends about the incredible injustice that human trafficking is. However, this is something that could easily be changed. I would encourage you to go out of your comfort zone to stand up for a worthy cause. Now that you know about a simple, easy way to help prevent sex trafficking, would you step up and join the movement?
